Dear fellow Club members,

We can look back on many successes for our club and its members this year.

The year was off to an excellent start when we hosted the Australian Championships in January. An enjoyable and very well supported event concluded appropriately for Norths Chess - our Grandmasters taking the top honours. Max Illingworth won the trophy with Anton Smirnov taking second place.

Later in the year Max and Anton, together with Irina Berezina-Feldman, won well contested selection to the Australian Olympiad teams with Anton ably leading Australia’s Open Team on Board 1.

Our club tournaments all had strong entry numbers. Brandon Clarke swept the field in everything he entered including winning both the Club Championship and the Purdy Memorial. The Winter Classic went to Bruce Murray and the Ford-Greenwood Seniors continued its tradition of producing a different name on the trophy each year – Vasil Tulevski (on tie-break) this time around.

An extraordinary team performance at St George last month saw us recapture the Big Board Shaw- Kellner trophy. The level of enthusiasm and team sprit on that night was exceptional. We were again successful in retaining the Little Board Centenary Shield from Harbord.

Our club members competed far and wide in a multitude of events with numerous personal achievements.

Sadly, the club lost two Life Members during the year, Frank Hutchings and Phil Viner, both of whom will be missed.

Our Annual general Meeting in December saw Paul Glissan retire as Club President after ten stellar years at the helm. The club showed its gratitude to Paul, and to Rex Simmonds, by according them both Life Membership in recognition of their service to the club. I am proud to be elected to replace Paul as President and hope I will fulfil the role as successfully.

I’d like to thank our hard working committee and our helpers for their efforts during the year – and would particularly mention our ‘engine room’ of Nick Cooper and David Stern who run and communicate our events so smoothly.

Thanks to all our members for supporting the club, its tournaments and our teams. Season’s Greetings to you all and best wishes for a successful chess-filled 2019.

We look forward to seeing you all back at the club, well refreshed after the seasonal break and hungry for good competitive chess at Norths in the New Year.

Peter Abbott
