In the first two weeks of 2010 norths chess club hosted the Australian Chess Championships.

Zhao Zong Yuan became the 2010 Australian Chess Champion having won his final game to take a record-equalling 10/11 score.

This eleven day chess festival comprised five tournaments that drew entries from some of Australia's and the world's top players and was hailed as a wonderful success by its many participants and observers.

During the competition attendees were informed and entertained by live commentatry on Championship games each day by grandmaster Ian Rogers in the Kamaraigal Room.
