Celebrating Peter Abbott – President of Norths Chess Club (2019–2024)

Today we want to recognise the incredible contribution of Peter Abbott, who served as President of Norths Chess Club from 2019 to 2024.

Peter originally joined Norths in 2007 and quickly became a vital part of the club, joining the committee by 2008 and earning a nomination for the Norths President’s Shield in 2011. In 2019, he stepped up as President. During his leadership, membership almost doubled and the club grew into one of the most respected and active chess communities in NSW.

Peter’s chess journey began long before Norths. Born in the UK, he moved to South Africa in 1976, where his career and chess both took off. At the 1978 South African Open in Durban, Peter won both the National (South African Open) and State (Natal) titles against an international field. After a long break from competitive play, he returned to chess in 2007 and has been a steady competitor and mentor ever since.

Today, Peter continues to serve the game as Vice President of the New South Wales Chess Association, helping guide chess growth across the state. His dedication, leadership, and lifelong passion for the game have left a lasting mark on our club and community.

Thank you, Peter, for everything you’ve done for Norths!
